(ABC 6 News) -- After a couple days of bitter cold, people across Southern Minnesota took advantage of Saturday's warm-up and sunshine at Essex Park in Rochester.

Dozens of skiers took part in the first Essex's Loopy Loppet to compete in the citizens nordic skiing competition. From students to coaches and jut lovers of the sports took their skis out and raced. Organizers say it's a fun way to bring the community together and get more people outside and active during the cold winter season. But for one skier, the competition was a good way to just meet people and coming in second place wasn't all that bad, "It's just fun to have that community of people who really like to do the same thing and it's great to just get out, and enjoy being in the winter, but also it kind of just feels like you're flying," said Madeline Perry of Mantorville.

Skiers raced on a three and a half mile loop.
