(ABC 6 News) -- For years, the Minnesota Department of Corrections in Minnesota has fought for increased funding to add more prison guards. With COVID-19 spreading throughout communities in the state, MN DOC Commissioner Paul Schnell knows it's only a matter of time before the virus is found inside one of the state's 11 prison facilities.
ABC 6 News spoke with Comm. Schnell this week as we look into how COVID-19 is affecting prisoners and staff. Even though it's only a few Schnell says there has been some staff loss due to self-quarantine, "There hasn't been a lot so far, but we do as I mentioned, aggressively screen staff as they come into the facility to make sure they aren't demonstrating or showing some of the symptoms that can go along with a COVID infection."
Schnell says there has been an uptick in DOC applications but he is still encouraging people to apply for positions.
Be sure to tune in on Monday on ABC 6 News at 6:30 with Betsy Singer for the full in-depth interview with Comm. Schnell.
