(ABC 6 News) - Rochester hospice workers receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday afternoon.

The effort is in thanks to a great local partnership between St. Croix Hospice and Hy-Vee.

Hospice workers are on the front lines of treating patients in the final months and weeks of life, those with increased vulnerability to COVID-19.

Eleven staff members received their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine Tuesday afternoon. Employees have been tested for COVID twice a week for the last several months and have needed to wear personal protective equipment to keep them safe.

The availability of COVID-19 vaccines is an exciting step in bringing an end to the pandemic and reuniting their patients with their loved ones.

"I am looking forward to being able to communicate with my patients again. Just with the barriers of wearing personal protective equipment, as well as having some restrictions whether or not we can go into facilities and patients homes. I'm just excited to care for our patients as we used to pre-COVID," says Betsy Bellock, Manager of Clinical Services in Rochester.
