UPDATE: BCA identifies Rochester officers involved in incident Wednesday morning

(ABC 6 News) - UPDATE 8-14: The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the Rochester officers involved in the officer-involved shooting Wednesday.

The BCA said the officer who discharged their firearm is Officer James Perry who has been a member of the RPD for four years.


The officer that was hit by the suspect vehicle is Officer Nick Kruger who has been with the officer for two years. Officer Kruger was taken to the hospital and was released Wednesday.

Both officers are on standard administrative leave. 

The BCA is reviewing body camera and dashcam video of the incident as part of the investigation. 


UPDATE: The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is identifying the man involved in an officer-involved shooting in Rochester.

26-year-old Dawante Atkins, of Rochester, is currently being held in the Olmsted County Jail on a probation violation.

The BCA said it will release the names of the officers involved in the coming days.


The Rochester Police Department said a shots fired call began around 2:00 a.m. when officers initiated a traffic stop.

Officials said a DUI enforcement officer attempted to pull a 26-year-old Rochester man over on Eastgate Dr in SE Rochester. The man drove off and ended up at the parking lot of Valleyhigh Flats in NW Rochester. 

The officer reportedly tried to make contact with the driver but they drove toward the officer, hitting them and sending them over the top of the car. The officer was taken to the hospital and has been released. The driver then hit two RPD squad cars, heavily damaging one of them.

The RPD said a second officer at the scene drew his weapon and fired at the vehicle.

The driver left the parking lot but stopped at a field nearby and was taken into custody. The name of the driver was not released as of Wednesday morning.


There was a heavy police presence at an apartment complex in Northwest Rochester Wednesday morning.

Rochester Police have confirmed to ABC 6 News that shots were fired after a traffic stop near Valleyhigh Flats. 

According to RPD, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is taking over the investigation.
