(ABC 6 News) -- The wait is finally over for the Hayfield Vikings boys basketball team. After 20 years between championship game appearances, the Vikings are finally bringing home the program's first-ever state title.

"It feels great," Vikings Head Coach Chris Pack said following his team's 61-60 win over Hancock on Saturday. "Just happy for this team and everything they've gone through. It's not just for these guys but other players who have been through the program."

The Vikings' Ethan Slaathaug, senior guard, was also declared Player of the Game. He put up 20 points in the championship game bringing his career total to 632. Slaathaug is the second-highest scorer in the state just behind Stewartville's Will Tschetter.

"An unreal feeling," Slaathaug said about being a state champion. "The hardwork we put in all season to finally have it pay off, for us to win a state championship, is just unreal. It's for everyone involved in the Hayfield basketball program. It's for the whole community of Hayfield, it's for everyone."

In addition to Slaathaug's game-high 20 points, Easton Fritcher and Kobe Foster also scored in double digits with 13 and 12 respectively. Foster was 4-5 on his three-pointers.
