(ABC 6 NEWS) - If you've been to Rochesterfest already this week, you might have seen many American flags placed in the ground near Soldier's Field and it is the first time the 'Field of Flags' has been at Rochesterfest.
There are 420 flags right next to Soldiers Field and 33 more are located at the memorial site for the new law enforcement memorial that is coming to Rochester.
Community members came to the Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation of Southeast Minnesota with an idea just a few weeks ago to hold a fundraiser with flags for the memorial. Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said the Boy Scouts, the community, and the foundation all came together to make this happen to not only thank law enforcement but people in our community.
"Let's turn it around we are coming out of a pandemic let's celebrate the pandemic, the coming out of it, and celebrate our hospital workers, our convenience store workers, our truck drivers, you know everybody that still had to plug away throughout this crazy last 18 months," said President of the Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation of Southeast Minnesota, Kevin Torgerson.
People can donate $25 for a single flag or more for multiple flags. Whoever they donate the flag to will get their name written on a ribbon that will be tied to one of the flags.
"This money is going to go right to the building of the memorial and supporting and maintaining and sustaining the memorial, which is not only going to be granite and concrete but there is going to be a real reflective area garden area there that I think the community is going to love," said Torgerson.
The memorial will honor 33 offices in our area that were killed in the line of duty.
The foundation has raised around $300,000 for the memorial, but they still need to reach their $500,000 goal. This memorial is 15 years in the making and they plan to break ground next week.
