(ABC 6 News) - On Friday various members of Rochester's diverse community gathered to host an event educating various workplaces in the area about inclusivity.
Diversity Crew put on the event called the Return on Investment of Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
"Every person you interact with - they're at different places. Meaning they have different experiences to draw from," Chris Moreland, a Diversity Crew partner, said.
The new, one-year-old organization called is working to highlight those different experiences.
"Until 2016 and the supreme court ruling legalizing marriage in all of the United States, I could not marry the man that I have loved and stood beside for more than 11 years," speaker David Gifford-Robinson said.
The free event featured diversity and inclusion speakers, panelists, and artists from around the country.
"People are excited and this room is fully packed. There's intergenerational diversity. We have our young leaders from the community," Dr. Angali Bhagra, a panelist, said.
The speakers laid out the initial steps to achieving a more inclusive workspace. They talked about pronouns, biases, and even some LGBTQ terminology.
"The outcome of this is for people to identify and understand how they should personally be involved in this work," Moreland said.
This was the diversity crew's first in-person event and there were over 100 people in attendance. The event organizers hope that people in attendance will take what they learned here and go back to their workplaces to advocate for a diverse more equitable work environment.
