(ABC 6 News) - Benjamin Bin Yan, a senior at Century High School, was awarded the Presidential Scholars Award. More than 5,000 students were eligible for this award. Yan was one of the 161 students honored. Students are chosen based on their College Board SAT or ACT scores or by nominations from educational leaders.
“I think of the people that have definitely helped me rather than just myself because you know, this definitely would not be possible without the teachers, all the mentors, my friends, family, you know who helped me out throughout this process," Yan said
After graduation, Yan plans to attend Stanford University in the fall to study computer science and English. He hopes that classes will return to in-person by then, but if not he has already found one way to meet his new classmates, via zoom.
"Even though we are separated, you know by geography we can still communicate, contact with each other, and ultimately you know find some kind of happiness in the situation we find ourselves in,” Yan said.
The Presidential Scholars program has been around since 1964 and has honored more than 7,000 students.
