(ABC 6 News) - A local youth soccer team is making history by winning the Target USA Cup, an international youth soccer tournament.
The Byron U15 boys soccer team brought home the gold last week after playing teams from all over the country.
"Teams come internationally but this year teams couldn't because of COVID and so we just played a lot of out-of-state teams, a lot of in-state teams as well," Liam Schick, a team caption for the Byron Youth Soccer Association, said.
This is the first time in history that the Byron Youth Soccer Association has won a championship at the USA Cup.
Team captain, Talon Henderson, said it's very, very, very surreal.
This team also competed without three of its regular players, having to pull up two U14 players to allow them to have two subs.
"So we brought a couple of guys up and we just had to have faith that they would play well and they did, they showed up and that was nice," Schick said.
"I feel like they were ready and ready for what was ahead of them," Henderson said.
Friends and family were there in Blaine to celebrate the big win.
"We were confident that we could definitely win it but it was going to take some hard work and a lot of focus," team captain, Aydan Tye, said.
That hard work paid off. Head coach Felipe Zeti and assistant coach Victor Clemente, both from Brazil, were so excited for the win too.
"They were like little kids out there," Schick said. "We just thank them for coaching us as hard as they could and believing in us to win it."
The boys took home title in the U15 bronze bracket.
"It feels good to be the first in history I guess to win USA Cup, build a new legacy," Schick said. "We hope there are many afterward that will win it too," Tye added.
