(ABC 6 News) - For 57 years, Mayo Clinic has been performing transplants and now they are marking the 20,000th transplant performed in its Rochester location.

Mayo's transplant history started in 1963 with the first living donor kidney transplant. Since those early days, the clinic has performed transplants from liver and lung to face and hand.

Transplants by the numbers:

  • 8,808 bone marrow transplants
  • 6,297 kidney transplants
  • 3,198 liver transplants
  • 714 heart transplants
  • 538 pancreas transplants
  • 441 lung transplants
  • 3 islet cell transplants
  • 1 face transplant

For years ABC 6 News has been following Andy Sandness, the first patient to receive a face transplant at Mayo Clinic. In 2016, a team of nine surgeons and more than 40 operating room staff worked for 56 hours, performing a face transplant on Sandness. In 2019, he shared his story of how it has transformed his life since the transplant.
