(ABC 6 News) - After 16 years, Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede announced he won't be seeking reelection. Several factors played into his decision but perhaps one of the most important is his wife's ailing health.
On this Valentines Day, ABC 6 News Anchor Laura Lee shares the story of the man they call the mayor. We all know Mayor Brede as a beloved and compassionate leader. One who is inclusive and thoughtful and supports issues and projects that keep Rochester moving forward.
Over the course of more than a decade -- Mayor Brede has represented the Med City. leading the charge as we introduce Destination Medical Center to the world. I had the honor of talking to Mayor Brede and sharing his story including how he never intended to run for political office.
"I came here from Austin a couple years after Austin Junior College, planned to work here a couple years, make some money and go back to college and become a Lutheran pastor, and then I met this cute student nurse and the whole story changed," said Brede.
And it would seem his story is about to change again. Announcing his retirement last month. Because at the end of the day he is simply a man who loves his wife. He now spends his days visiting Judy, his wife of more than 56 years, at a nursing home. Judy -- suffers from dementia.
Wednesday night at 10, Laura Lee shares that story, and how in the most special moments, Judy remembers their love story and comes back to him.
