(ABC 6 News) -- Local voters showed up in Charles City Sunday evening to hear what 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders had to say.

“I’m just hoping to listen to as many candidates as I can and see where they stand so I can make a very informed decision,” said attendee Val Biwer of Charles City.

Sanders held a green jobs town hall where he discussed how the Green New Deal will create good-paying jobs in Iowa. He also spoke about how climate change is affecting the state, a topic on the minds of many voters in the room.

“The environment is a very important issue for me. I have 13 grandkids and I want a nice clean world for them,” Biwer said.

“If we don’t get our act together, the number of days in Iowa, where it will be 100 degrees or more, is going to go up exponentially. Crop production will go down because crops do not do well, corn, soy, whatever it may be, do not do well in excessive heat,” said Sanders.

The town hall was also opened up for questions and Sanders made it a point to talk about some of his issues, including his plan for education.

“What we are going to do is impose a very modest tax on Wall Street speculation, which will raise about 1.6 trillion over a ten year period. We do that, we cancel all student debt in America, make public colleges and universities tuition-free,” Sanders said.

Another topic on many minds was healthcare. Some in attendance voiced their concerns that what drug and insurance companies are doing is criminal. Sanders said healthcare is a human right.

“It is criminal, by the way. That’s not a figurative statement, that’s a literal statement. They are engaging in price-fixing, which we will address,” mentioned Sanders.

“Heath care at my age is extremely important too, and I know people who are paying way, way too much for health care insurance,” Biwer said.

Sanders wasn't the only candidate to visit north Iowa over the weekend. On Saturday, Senator Kamala Harris made a stop at the Historic Park Inn in Mason City.

Sanders will go on to Des Moines on Monday to hold a Seniors Town Hall and this event wraps up his Iowa Tour this weekend.
