Previous story:

In Rochester, any candidate can request a vote recount, but it is how the recounts are funded that can change depending on how close of a race it was.

"Basically under one half of 1% which Ward 1 between the second and third place candidate is less than one-quarter of one percent difference, and Ward 5 it appears to be right at one half of one percent difference between the second and third place candidate,” Rochester City Clerk Anissa Hollingshead said. “So it appears both of those races would be eligible for a publicly-funded recount if the candidates did choose to do that."

In Ward 1, those second and third place candidates are Heather Holmes and Paul Myhrom, separated by five votes. In Ward 5, Judy Hickey got second, followed by Byron Clark by just 18 votes.

In order to get a publicly-funded recount, one of those candidates would have to request one.  Paul has told ABC 6 News that he "owes it to my supporters to ask for a recount."

After canvassing is done on Friday at 2 p.m. candidates then have five days to get their requests for a recount in.

ABC 6 News would like to point out that our News Director, David Springer, is married to Holmes. He has no connection to our coverage of this race.
