Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Pour into Iowa this Weekend

June 08, 2019 11:11 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- Hundreds of people gathered to hear them speak. One of the speakers was Pete Buttigieg, who formally announced his entrance into the already crowded pool of presidential primary candidates in mid-April.

Two months into his bid he is among the higher polling candidates, usually right behind front runners former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

37-year-old Buttigieg appears to be appealing to the younger generation.

His campaign page reads “Pete belongs to the generation that came of age with school shootings, the generation that provided the majority of the troops in the conflicts after 9/11, the generation that is on the business end of climate change, and the generation that-unless we take action-stands to be the first to be worse off economically than their parents”

He’s hoping this will resonate with Iowa voters.

"I always feel very at home in Iowa. What's got to change in our country, I think a lot of the answers are going to come from our part of the United States. I think the heartland is going to bring a lot of the answers forward,” he said.

He spoke as part of the Passport to Victory series hosted by the Iowa First District Democrats. He was joined by Mayor Bill de Blasio, Governor John Hickenlooper and Senator Amy Klobuchar. They were trying to win over a group of first congressional district voters. This district voted for Obama in 2012 and then swung for Trump in 2016.

"When you look at the community we are in right now Cresco, Howard County as everyone has pointed out had the strongest change from 2012 to 2016 in the whole country. So I'm really glad we are able to be here in Cresco and have an event that showcases some of our democratic leaders right now," said Chair of the Winneshiek County Democrats Nathan Thompson.

The Passport to Victory series continues this summer with two more events in July and August
