(ABC 6 News) - Excited skiers and snowboarders have hit the slopes for opening weekend at Welch Village.
"Really excited; I was looking forward to it when they posted on Instagram about it two weeks ago,” said Jonah Deppe of Red Wing.
Deppe has been hitting the slopes at this southeastern Minnesota resort for the past few years. He said every year when the temperatures start to drop, his excitement starts to build.
"The whole off-season pretty much. We've been really pumped,” Deppe said.
The excitement also transcends to resort employees who look forward to opening weekend like a kid might look forward to Christmas.
"I love it. Yesterday was the first day and it was great. We had a lot of people. Everybody was smiling, having a good time, really excited the ski season is here. I love it. I love opening day. It's more or less a holiday for me,” said Cody Rollings, Rental Manager at Welch Village.
Just like any holiday, preparation is key.
"It takes a crew. We have all of the outside crew making sure the water pipes are good, the snow machines are running correctly, all the groomers are running correctly. It takes a whole crew to get this going,” Rollings said.
150 snow guns create the man-made snow for the nearly six dozen slopes.
"With the rain last night we were a little unsure about it, but it was pretty good. The snow's nice,” said Deppe.
Depending on the weather, Welch Village will be open until March or April.
