(ABC 6 News) – After introducing State Rep. Peggy Flanagan (DFL-St. Louis Park) as his running mate on Thursday, U.S. Rep. Tim Walz (DFL-Mankato) at a campaign event Saturday said he knows the timing is unusual but a shake-up is needed.
“Peggy has a couple great sayings on this, one on this is we have a lot of conversations and a lot of people to talk to because this ticket is about bringing folks to the table,” Walz said.
Highlighting her accomplishments as a representative, school board member and as part of the Children’s Defense Fund, Walz said while they don’t agree on every issue, their differing life experiences mean they’ll complement each other well.
“I think it makes this the ticket that can go a long ways to unifying the damage that has been done,” he said.
Flanagan weighed in on the issues, and what she sees as the biggest topics affecting Minnesotans in the upcoming election.
“When I think about the toughest issues that are facing Minnesotans, they're really sort of those bread and butter issues of can I take care of my family. So we're going to tackle those head-on,” she said.
She also sounded off on potentially being the highest-ranking Native American state-level officeholder in U.S. history.
“It's important when people can see themselves reflected in the leaders around them. So I know firsthand what a difference it made to me to have a teacher who came from my community, that shared experience,” she said.
Walz and Flanagan are facing a crowded DFL primary against State Reps. Tina Liebling, Erin Murphy, and Paul Thissen. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and state auditor Rebecca Otto round out the DFLers vying for the governorship.
Republican candidates include State Rep. Matt Dean, State Sen. David Osmek, former party chairman Keith Downer, Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson and Christopher Chamberlain.
