Community leaders and veterans gathered with health care professionals Thursday to celebrate the grand opening of the new Rochester VA Clinic dedication.
The clinic moved from its previous location in Northwest Rochester to 3551 Commercial Drive South West.
"For me, I live South East so it is nice. It’s closer,” said Veteran Lawrence Meyer.
It’s also bigger and will offer additional services like x-rays and physical therapy.
"They've got a lot more things. Otherwise, we have to go all the way up to the hospital in Minneapolis," said Meyer.
Representative Jim Hagedorn provided special remarks at the opening ceremony.
"It's fitting that the VA has continued to expand in Rochester because Rochester continues to expand and these much-needed services are going to be excellent," he said.
Minneapolis VA Health Care System Community-based outpatient clinic director Kassidy Karnik said there has been a lot of growth since the first clinic opened in 2001.
"We have increased our veteran population from 684 after our first year of being open to 4,425," said Karnik.
Now there are 27 employees at the new clinic, including five patient care teams and 6 employees dedicated to mental health.
As part of the grand opening, the facility was open to the public for tours.
"At least if I take the tour now then when I come and have the checkup at least I know where to go," said Meyer.
Meyer is glad to see the growth of veterans services in Rochester.
"This is kind of a central area. It's a lot closer to a lot of people," he said.
