(ABC 6 News) - “Tee It Up for the Troops” will tee off on Thursday, August 24th in Rochester for the 11th time since its inception. Through the years, the event has put an emphasis on showing veterans, current members of the Military, and blue star families that the community is thankful for their service.
“Tee It Up” started as one fundraiser in Minnesota inspired by a soldier serving in Iraq in 2005. From there, Rochester’s own Vietnam Veteran Bob Dunham was inspired to host his own.
“I saw this little ad in the paper on a Sunday after Church and said I’m going to do that,” he said.
In just five years, Rochester’s own “Tee It Up” raised over $250,000.
Today, 58 of these fundraising events are happening nationwide. It is projected that over $7,000,000 has been raised for veterans and veteran organizations over the years. At each community’s own fundraiser, 50% of these proceeds are channeled locally.
“Half the money that’s raised at this event will stay right here in our community, the other half will go towards our national endeavors,” said Rochester’s current Organizer, Lynn Clarey.
“…many different locations we were able to help…the different clubs…the DAV, the VFW, and etcetera,” Dunham said.
This year the Rochester “Tee It Up” will also get the opportunity to publically recognize two Vietnam Vets who are now both Medal of Honor recipients. However, all Veterans, families, and those serving will be remembered and honored for their sacrifice.
“It’s a year-round love and we’re able to help out a lot of good Veterans who needed help and that was really the purpose of the entire process,” said Dunham.
For the past ten years, Rochester’s local event has been held at the Willow Creek Golf Course. According to the “Tee It Up” website, the event is currently sold out. If you’re interested in donating, a link with directions can be found here: http://www.teeitupforthetroops.org/rochester/
