City of Austin declares snow emergency

(ABC 6 News) – The impending winter storm and heavy snowfall that is forecasted has prompted the City of Austin to declare a snow emergency.

The City says snow emergencies are typically called when about 4 inches of snow falls. A snow emergency will last 72-hours, unless cancelled early by City officials.

The snow emergency will be in effect from 12:00 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 22 to 12:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.

During this period, parking in the business area of the City of Austin will be prohibited between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. The area includes midtown Austin, Sterling Shopping Center, Hormel Plant area and East Side business area.

Meanwhile, parking in the residential areas will be as follows:

  • All vehicles on streets, avenues, places and drives of the City of Austin, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to the succeeding day, shall be parked on the side of the streets, avenues, places and drives bearing EVEN-numbered U.S. postal office address on EVEN-number days of the month.
  • All vehicles on streets, avenues, places and drives of the City of Austin, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to the succeeding day, shall be parked on the side of the streets, avenues, places and drives bearing ODD-numbered U.S. postal office address on ODD-number days of the month.
