The Future of "Thursdays"

(ABC 6 News) -- Although the chill in the air may have you doubting summer will ever show its face, a favorite Rochester event kicks off in less than a month.

‘Thursdays on First and Third’ has become a summertime staple in the Med City with great food, drinks, vendors and live music; but this year it has a new name.

“It’s not ‘Thursdays on First and Third’ anymore,” said Karli McElroy, senior director of placemaking for the Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA).

Now, it’s ‘Thursdays Downtown.’

Despite the name change, it’ll be the same community get-together you remember.

“It’s a really fun festival and it's really fun to see the community coming together and it’s a good excuse for all of us to get a shift to work outside in the summer so nobody ever minds too much,” said Tessa Leung, CEO of Grand Rounds Brewing Company.

However, the name change is a sign of things to come.

“With the great developments that are happening downtown with heart of the city the event is going to have to move in 2020,” McElroy said.

Where it’ll move is still up in the air, especially with so much to do before the streets close down and the city comes out in less than a month.

“There’s a lot of hype, there’s a lot of buildup, there’s a lot to get ready for,” said Christine Stahl, owner of The Taphouse.

“This year we’re bringing back a fan favorite. We’re going to do paella again,” Leung said.

Throw in a special announcement from the RDA later this summer about a “top secret band” and the final ‘Thursdays Downtown’ at its original location off First and Third might just be the summer break Rochester needs.

“Everybody comes out so it’s just a nice way to see everybody you haven’t seen through a long winter, and it feels like a party,” Leung said.

‘Thursdays Downtown’ kicks off on June 6th.
