(ABC 6 News)-- Officials say about 160 people traveled from all over the states to serve the people of Pine Island- most of them being
Teens Serve is a mission trip that allows homeowners in a selected area free repairs- all completed by teenagers from other states. This year's trip to Minnesota answered the prayers of one lucky homeowner who says she'd been hoping for the opportunity to make improvements.
"One day I was asking the Lord you know how I can get what I need to help me get some of the work done and that week the announcement about Teen Serve came out in the newspaper and a friend of mine told me about it," said Donna Schmidt, the resident whose home was chosen out of more than 100 applications.
The teens were broken up into groups and spread out to 28 different worksites mainly in the Pine Island area. According to one teen who traveled nearly 20 hours from South Carolina, the week away from home has been a great experience so far.
"I enjoy it. It makes taking this week off work, it really makes it worth it," said Laura Manning, a first-time camper from Fort Mill SC.
Youth Pastor Roddy MacIvor, who brought campers from Nashville Tennessee says that this experience is about selflessly serving others, but also growing closer in your faith - which 13-year old Alayna Egvert says she's doing.
"It's kind of like in that mutual state, like you know like you're friends but not like really good friends if that makes sense. But like this helped me get a little closer to him," said Egvert, who traveled with her church from Sidney Ohio.
Mr. Schmidt says though he'll continue with more of the housework when Teens Serve finishes their week in Minnesota, he's grateful for everything they've been able to accomplish so far.
"They have just done wonders for curb appeal on the house and refurbishing the building on the outside of the house, and helped me save so much time and labor," said Schmidt.
