Storms Cause Structural Damage to Homes, Trees, and Power Outages

July 20, 2019 11:03 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- A bizarre scene took place on Garfield Avenue in Albert Lea when trees fell on power lines located near railroad tracks, causing the arms to go down and bells to ring for hours. The incident forced traffic to maneuver their way through the obstacle. An uprooted tree near the railroad tracks also caused some more issues for drivers.

Down the road near E 8th Street and Frank Avenue, a crew with the Albert Lea Fire Department worked to free a tree that had been embedded in a truck. Nearby, large branches and an uprooted tree could be seen.

Memorial Park and homes across the road sustained damage.

At E 9th Street and Academy Avenue, another fallen tree on a home was visible. There were also severe damage to the backyards of a row of homes. A homeowner on that street is collecting water in bowls and buckets after a tree fell on their home causing damage to the roof. These residents are also without power as wires have been torn from their homes.

Over on Saint John Avenue, downed live wires have forced authorities to block off the road, and a fallen tree has also caused major damage to a garage.

“My wife calls me and said that the tree came down on the garage. I was like; ‘send me some pictures’, to see how bad it is. I didn’t expect it to be as bad as it is when I got home. Obviously, you can tell it’s caved in the whole roof of the garage” said Willis Marks of Albert Lea.

Marks say no vehicles were in the garage at the time the tree fell, but he does have other valuables stored inside, including $400 worth of meat, now a complete loss.

“All of it, it’s lost, it’s going to be a lost cause. Where the tree hit on the other side of the building is where I had the chest freezer with all the meat in it, and I’m pretty sure it took out the whole freezer as well.” Marks said.

Marks says they had planned a birthday party in the garage on Sunday.
