(ABC 6 News)-- The Southland School District is considering relocating elementary students due to rising costs, lagging state funds and declining enrollment.
"It's never an easy decision to even have discussions about this, let alone take a final action, if that's what it comes down to,” Southland School District Superintendent Jeff Sampson said.
The school in Rose Creek has been part of the consolidated Southland School District since the mid-1970s, but its days might be numbered.
"The school board has directed me to gather information in regard to the closing of the elementary school, and the processes that are needed to accomplish that task if the board chooses to do that,” Sampson said.
Voters rejected a referendum last summer, leading school officials to explore other options.
"We dug in more to our finances and recently our finance subcommittee made a recommendation that closing the building in Rose Creek would be the best option that we have," Sampson said.
“I think there are different options they can do and they might need to sharpen their pencils a little more,” said Andy Felten, who is opposed to the potential closing.
If the board votes to close the school, the elementary students would be moved to the middle/high school in Adams
"The students will fit into this building according to our architect," Sampson said.
"For as big of an area as we cover why are we in this situation when I can look at other school districts around that are a lot smaller but yet they seem to be doing okay," Felten said.
“We're just in an information-gathering stage right now and then that information will be presented at the February 22 meeting,” Sampson said. “And from there, the board will decide which direction they want to take it."
If the board decides to close the elementary school in Rose Creek, it would not happen in time for the next school year so plans could be made to accommodate the additional students in Adams.
