Local Businesses are Ready for Snow

(ABC 6 News)-- Well, it may be December, but it definitely doesn't seem like it. No snow and it’s not very cold out; not our usual winters in the Midwest.

Is this good or bad news for businesses that are dependent on winter?

"Once December hits people like snow and they want to see snow," said Tyrol Ski and Sports co-owner, Kristin Welch.

Welch said snow is wonderful for their business and is one of the best advertisers. She also said while the cooler weather helps business, the white flakes are what they want to see.

"Snow definitely, you know, helps. It helps people think more about getting out, you know, getting out in the snow as well as it I think gets people in the holiday shopping mood," Welch said.

This is, of course, good for business; especially for a business like River Valley Power and Sport. But seeing dozens of snowmobiles in the snow-less parking lot is not what it would call, "a beautiful sight".

"We're ready, we are ready," smiled Ron Gora, General Sales Manager at River Valley Power and Sport.

Even so, Gora said he's very thankful business is running smoothly, even without the snow.

"We had a game plan going into this year, so we've been doing very well,” said Gora.

As soon as those first few inches of snowfall, both businesses are expecting more customers.

"It's unbelievable how people come in and they just, they're ready to buy. They're ready to do it now. Accessories, you're looking at oil, any of that type of thing and new sleds of course. But it definitely changes their mind and their attitude, and sparks interest in a hurry," Gora said

One snow service in Rochester said the first time he went out to plow last year was on December 4th and hopes the snow will fall soon.

"We get the impression that people are ready for the snow and want it," Welch said.
