Snafu Stalls Election Results

(ABC 6 News) -- It's a system with a lot of moving parts. And sometimes moving parts break down.

"It does add a little bit of nervousness" Jeff Sampson admitted.

"I shut the TV off really not knowing anything at 2:15" Jeff Baldus added.

"We had some reconciliation issues," deputy Mower county auditor/treasurer Amanda Kiefer told ABC6.

Some Mower county results were among the last in the state to be reported from the mid-term election.

"We've just got to take a look and see what it is, and again what do we need to do to fix it," said Jeff Baldus, who ultimately learned that he had won a seat on the county board of commissioners.

The county's election software requires all the early votes to be entered into the system before any votes from election day itself.

"When absentee or mail ballots come in we have to mark them as voted so people get their records, and we want to make sure we have enough signatures, which is our envelope the ballots come in, and the ballots are matching up. so once we ran our totals we had a little bit of a ... not much, but a little bit of a discrepancy” deputy auditor/treasurer Amanda Kiefer said. “So we did our procedures and made sure our numbers were matching. We did have to rerun some because for some reason, maybe a ballot got stuck in the machine and we finally balanced but we want to make sure everybody's vote counts so that reconciliation is really important to us."

The Southland and Leroy Ostrander school districts were waiting for referendum results … and got good news when the bugs were worked out.

"And I think that runs parallel with what we've got going on in education,” said Jeff Sampson, superintendent of both districts. “We want students to learn that it's okay to fail as long as we correct what happened previously and move forward and learn from our mistakes."
