Student Shoe Collection Teaches Life Lessons

(ABC 6 NEWS) - You probably didn't give them much thought when you put them on this morning.

But what if you didn't have them?

Many people don't ... and some students in our area want to change that.

"You should just really try to help as much as you can at certain times and do what you would want to be done for you," said Southland eighth-grader and student council member Eli Wolff.

It's more than just a spelling lesson ... there are different kinds of "souls".

"Kids bring in shoes ...." Eli Wolff said.

" send off to people in need in other countries, our own country" added Southland middle school teacher Katie McIntyre.

"And they can get those shoes and it really helps them out a lot," Eli Wolff said.

It's called "Soles4Souls. and some of the shoes donated locally *could* be headed for hurricane victims in Texas.

The Southland student councils are partnering with the Adams Lions Club to collect new and gently used shoes.

And there's a lesson that goes beyond the classroom.

"Giving back not only helps the people around you but can help you yourself, grow and become a better person" teacher Katie McIntyre said.

And that's a lesson that can last a lifetime.

"Livelong giving, lifelong service, lifelong giving to other people we find very very important because those lessons that come from inside a lot of times can carry through to the way you behave on the outside."

The Souls4Soles collection runs through October 16th at Southland high school middle school in Adams, and October 16th through the 27th at the elementary school in Rose Creek.

And it IS possible to make the world a better place ... one pair of shoes at a time.

"A little goes long ways, and anything helps," said eighth-grader Eli Wolff. "If a lot of people come together and work together, it can turn into something big."
