Severe Weather Awareness Week In Iowa

Severe Weather Awareness Week In Iowa

March 26, 2019 05:03 AM

This week is designated as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. It is a time, all week long, to get familiar with the upcoming severe weather season. Know what to do, and how to stay safe, if severe weather should strike, whether it's a severe thunderstorm, a flash flood, or a tornado. This is the week to practice where to go in the event of severe weather, at home, work, school, etc. A state-wide tornado drill, **FOR IOWA ONLY**, will take place Wednesday March 27th, from 10 AM to 11 AM. A simulated tornado watch and warning will be issued, triggering the EAS and sounding the warning sirens. Anytime a tornado warning is issued, get inside, to a low-level interior room or closet. Basements are preferred. Get under furniture if you can, and cover your head. NEVER try to out run a tornado in a vehicle. Anytime a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, seek shelter inside a sturdy structure, and away from windows. If a flash flood warning is issued for your area, stay away from rising water levels, and seek higher ground. If you encounter a flooded roadway, NEVER try to drive through it. Find an alternate route, to your destination; turn around, don't drown.
