Senator Carla Nelson Confirms Bid for Congress, Shifts Focus to Las Vegas

(ABC 6 News)--Senator Carla Nelson confirmed Monday she is running to represent Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, but her announcement shifted focus in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting.

"With the senseless tragedy that has occurred in Las Vegas, I don't believe that these words that I've prepared are right for today,” Nelson said as she ripped her original speech at the podium. “So we're not going to talk about this, we're going to talk just from the heart."

Nelson, who is currently a Republican State Senator representing Rochester, said she doesn't believe it was a day for campaigning.

"We need to think of the victims, the families, those who are healing, many injured in last night's violence and we need to think of the law enforcement. Those who run into danger and help others and we thank them," said Nelson.

Nelson is up against Jim Hagedorn for the 1st District Republican nomination.

"I've said all along that people should run or not run for office based on what's best for them. All I can control is the Hagedorn campaign is how hard we work and that we maintain what we've been doing from the last election and even that last election before that," said 1st Congressional District Candidate, Jim Hagedorn.

Hagedorn also addressed the shooting in Las Vegas.

"It's a terrible, terrible situation. I just look at it as horrific and evil and I think we all pray for the victims and their families and pray that it never happens again," said Hagedorn.

While this day was supposed to be her big moment announcing her run for Congress, Nelson said she plans on having a celebration at a later, more appropriate date.
