February 16, 2018 07:54 PM

(ABC 6 News)-- The Florida governor called for the FBI director's resignation after discovering the FBI failed to investigate a tip from January about Nicolas Cruz possibly plotted a school shooting.

Like many other mass shootings, it sparks conversation to our state and nation's gun laws.

"This year has been a very sad year even within the state of Minnesota," said Rochester Representative Nels Pierson. "I think it's important for lawmakers to focus on finding solutions and that's a big part of our job."

Representative Pierson also said the state has specific duties as far as issuing permits and licensing people, and that these type of issues are constantly being discussed.

Contributing to the discussion, the organization 'Protect MN,' talked about its motto of being against gun violence, not against gun ownership.

"It's a public health model of how we can prevent gun violence from happening through sensible laws and through education," said Protect MN executive director Reverend Nancy Nord Bence.

Protect MN will be heading to the Capitol on Feb. 22 to make its case for gun control.

The Florida school shooting is the deadliest mass shooting since Sandy Hook in 2012.
