(ABC 6 News) -- A man, who authorities said brutally assaulted a woman, was on the run for several hours Wednesday evening.

In the morning hours of April 25, Olmsted County dispatchers received a call from a family member of a woman who was allegedly being assaulted by her former partner at a residence on the 1900 block of Marion Road in SE Rochester.

Interim Chief John Sherwin with the Rochester Police Department, said the woman had injuries over her entire body, had been choked to the point of unconsciousness and had been physically assaulted for several hours. Sherwin said she tried to escape at one point, but the man suspected of assaulting her, 39-year-old Patrick O'Connell of Rochester, pulled her back into the residence. Sherwin said the woman was initially hesitant to give police information about O'Connell because she feared for her life.

Around 6 p.m. authorities received word that O'Connell's vehicle was parked near the Gamehaven Scout Reservation in SE Rochester. Throughout the evening, authorities received phone calls from several people who said O'Connell had called them and was making suicidal threats and that he had a shotgun.

Several law enforcement agencies; including Rochester Police, Olmsted County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol were helping in the search for O'Connell. Since the area by Gamehaven Scout Reservation is so vast and wooded, Sheriff's Captain Scott Behrns said the State Patrol helicopter and a drone were used in the search.

Eventually, Behrns said a detective was able to make phone contact with O'Connell, who agreed to turn himself in at a residence on the 4700 block of Simpson Road SE in Marion Township.

O'Connell was taken into custody at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center. He faces charges of false imprisonment, assault, and theft.
