A 64-year-old Rochester woman is dead after a crash just north of the city early Monday afternoon.

Olmsted County Sheriff's Office Captain Scott Behrns said deputies were called to the intersection of 48th Street and River Road NE in Cascade Township around 1:20 p.m. When they arrived on scene, deputies found a white Ford sedan and a silver Buick had crashed in the intersection.

The 64-year-old woman driving the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency personnel attempted lifesaving efforts. The driver of the Buick, a man in his 70s, was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital Saint Marys Campus with unknown injuries.

A preliminary investigation showed the driver of the Ford was heading north on River Road NE and failed to stop. She was then hit by the Buick, which was eastbound on 48th Street, Behrns said.

The road will remain closed until at least 6 p.m. as the sheriff's office and Rochester Police Department continue their investigation; drivers are being asked to find an alternate route.
