(ABC 6 News) -- A shake-up could be coming in the race for Minnesota's 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by Democratic Congressman Tim Walz.

ABC 6 News has on good authority that State Sen. Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, will be making a run for U.S. Congress.

Nelson's name has been tossed around as a potential candidate for the position in past elections, but this would be her first bid for federal office.  She is a former school teacher who lives in Rochester.

During her time in the Minnesota Senate, she has made health care, commerce, higher education and taxes among a few of her top priorities.

Nelson is expected to make an official announcement next week.  If she does run, it would put her up against Jim Hagedorn for the republican nomination.
