Mac's Cafe Closes Down As One of Rochester's Landmark

(ABC 6 News)- A downtown Rochester staple is closing its doors after 68 years of being in business.

ABC 6 News reporter Hannah Tiede spoke to the owner of Mac's Restaurant who says the city's changing landscape is impacting profits.

Nestled in the heart of busy downtown Rochester an American-Greek style restaurant... that's been there since the 50's.

But soon Mac's Cafe will be no more.

“Very, very emotional,” said Owner, George Psomas.

Psomas took over the family business 10 years ago.

He says the closing of the Chateau Theatre and the Civic Center remodel really took a bite out of business.

“Also, 15 years ago there were 15 restaurants in these two blocks,” said Psomas. “Now there's 55.”

This summer, Psomas first began contemplating closing. He tried to make things work with more advertising and deals for the customers but ...

“Mac’s has now just run its course,” he said.

During it's time though, Mac's reputation reached across States.

“My friends here had been here before and specifically mentioned this place,” said a Virginia man.

“It’s a great place, a classic diner,” said an Orlando woman.

“We seek out places like this,” said her husband.

But perhaps those saddened most by the news are the regulars...

“I love Greek food and I know this is the place to come,” said one woman.

“They will be missed,” said another.

“You always get a good deal here,” said a local man. “Get some breakfast and get you on your way.”

The Rochester Downtown Alliance released a statement saying "It is never easy to see a business close, but the legacy that Mac's Cafe has created will always be part of the fabric of the downtown community."

“It's definitely going to be a sore spot for me,” said Psomas.

But as Psomas still owns the building, knowing he will get to hand-select who will take over the space...

“Will make that feel better,” he said.
