(ABC 6 News) - John Sherwin was sworn in Wednesday morning as Rochester's Interim Police Chief. He'll fill the role until the city finds a permanent replacement for former Chief Roger Peterson.
Sherwin is a 20-year law enforcement veteran and joined the Rochester department in 2001. He was promoted to Captain in 2011 and has served Captain of Investigations and the Public Information Officer since 2013.
"The job of police chief is a huge responsibility in keeping our community safe and leading that effort, I've heard 'am I a placeholder?' I don't think that's a good term because the job that our officers do is too important to have someone who is just a placeholder," Sherwin said. "As we move forward in the next few weeks, and until we have the chief appointed, it's my job that I'm leading the team and that's what I plan to do."
The process of selecting the city's next chief is still underway. Three finalists are currently under consideration.
Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede said he hopes to announce a permanent replacement late next week.
