(ABC 6 News) -- If spring cleaning is on your agenda this season, local entrepreneur Sara Messina has some advice:
“Pick up and hold each piece of clothing or each item and decide how it makes you feel. Focus on whether or not it brings you joy,” she said.
Her words of wisdom may sound familiar to those who have seen the show “Tidying Up” on Netflix.
That’s because Messina’s technique is based on the KonMari method developed by organizational expert Marie Kondo and made famous by the reality show.
“It encourages a category by category approach, instead of a room by room approach or organizing by location,” Messina said.
Through this method, people are encouraged to tidy by categories like clothes, books, papers and sentimental items.
When Messina moved from Florida to Rochester last summer with three little kids, she found this method to be the most effective at keeping her home organized. It’s something she wants to share.
“I learned that you can become a KonMari consultant and go through a training and practice process, so I decided I wanted to bring this service to Rochester,” she said.
This week, Messina officially opened her business “Simple Home Method.”
Through the business, she goes into the homes of her clients and helps them organize. She suggests finding what sparks joy for each individual. That’s how she organizes her clothes.
"I personally feel joy storing them in color-coded order, like a rainbow," Messina said.
Her services range from $75 for an introductory session to $180 per month for a three-month membership.
“The reason this KonMari method really resonates with me is that it’s so effective,” she said.
