(ABC 6 News) -- Many providers supply Rochester residents with the necessary signals for phone and internet, but for years, there's been just one cable provider.

Starting Tuesday, though, a new service provider will begin its move into town.

"Earlier this year, the city council approved a franchise agreement with MetroNet, which is based in Illinois," said Jenna Bowman, communications manager for the city of Rochester.

So what does MetroNet bring to the city that current providers don't?

"Reliable internet access with symmetrical speeds up to 1 gigabit, with 4k capable fiber television service, along with a rich fiber telephone service," says Keith Leonhardt, with MetroNet.

While phone and internet are available, the city's contract deals only with cable television.

The agreement suggests that MetroNet has five years to cover 80 percent of its construction grounds, which will result in residential construction and road closures.

"MetroNet will be doing work in the right-of-way," Bowman said, "so I think it's just important for the community to know that they will be working in places that maybe community members aren't used to seeing people work."

MetroNet officials say signs will go in the ground alerting area residents of construction, and residents can also look forward to letters in the mail.

Construction is expected to last a year.
