(ABC 6 News) -- Visit Mason City Iowa is excited to announce that the Jefferson Highway Association has selected Mason City as the host community for their 2020 annual conference. Mason City has made a bid for the conference in previous years.
“I think having the signage definitely helped. Iowa is the first state to mark the entire route with official signage, so they are excited to see that,” said Lindsey James, executive director with Visit Mason City Iowa.
The highway has ties to Mason City. The late Hugh Shepherd, a Mason City attorney, was instrumental in routing the highway through north Iowa.
“For a while, he served as the international president of the Jefferson Highway Association and international headquarters were located in the Historic Park Inn, which is the venue that will be hosting at least a portion of conference activities when they’re here in June,” said James.
Members from around the nation and internationally are expected to attend the conference, but it will not be exclusive to leaders.
“There’s opportunity for folks in north Iowa to be involved the conference, whether on a planning committee or coming as a speaker. We know of a few historic preservation efforts that are underway in neighboring communities that are along the Jefferson Highway. We’ll be looking for folks who are very knowledgeable about those projects to come and speak,” James said.
James will assist with a site visit for representatives from the Jefferson Highway Association on Friday, which will help them make important venue decisions.
