(ABC 6 News) -- Gabby Brown, a 1-year-old diagnosed with AML leukemia, just finished her third round of chemotherapy.
Gabby’s parents own Estelle’s Eatery and Bar; everyone in the small town of Harmony and beyond has rallied for this little girl. Now, a local composer is drumming up support for Gabby.
“The name of the song is 'Gabby’s Gifts through the Eyes of a Child,' ” said Lane Powell, a concert band composer.
Powell, who is an active honor band conductor, is often commissioned to write music, most recently for the high school honor band in Elk River.
"Sometimes you get writer's block, and it takes weeks or months to get a tune down," he said. "This one came to me on a two-hour plane ride back home; I could see and hear the music and I couldn't wait to get home and put it on paper."
He knew this song would be a tribute to his friend Matt Brown’s daughter Gabby, who was diagnosed with leukemia last fall.
Powell is selling the electronic score and parts, giving all of the proceeds to the Browns to help pay Gabby’s medical bills.
Saturday, she began her third round of chemotherapy, just as Powell was conducting the band playing her song, according to Matt Brown.
"The very first day of her third round of chemo; she was actually getting chemo when they were playing with the orchestra in the Cities, so it was amazing," said Brown.
That timing was not planned.
"If you want to say coincidence, go ahead, but we don't believe in that anymore," said Brown.
Later, Matt played the song for music-loving Gabby.
"It's a lullaby, and it’s nice and soft and soothing, and she dug it," he said.
She has now finished her treatment, but will stay at the hospital at least another month while she recovers.
"The one thing I do want people to understand is, this disease messed with the wrong family and the wrong community. Gabby’s got this," said Powell.
From Brown’s restaurant employees to old friends with special talents, the community has been behind his family every step of the way.
To purchase the sheet music, email Lane Powell at email@example.com.
He will send the electronic score and parts, then send out an invoice. All checks should be made out to the Family of Gabby Brown.
