(ABC 6 News) -- The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act inadvertently raised taxes on families that already have given so much to the United States.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) hopes legislation she supported, The Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act, will fix that mistake.
Spouses of service members who have died are eligible for survivor benefits, and many choose to sign them over to their children. With the 2017 tax cuts, the tax on those benefits for kids climbed from 12-15 percent to 37 percent.
"Tucked inside that tax bill was something that I don't think anyone intended to do. I didn't vote for this bill, but tucked in there was a provision that increased the taxes on Gold Star families and these are families whose loved one made the ultimate sacrifice for our country," Klobuchar said.
The Senate passed the bill earlier this week; Klobuchar hopes it will be signed into law by the President before Memorial Day.
