Harmony Haunted House Ready to Scare

October 17, 2018 06:20 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- It’s scary to think Halloween is exactly two weeks away. This time of year seems to have snuck up on us.

Tomorrow, a truly haunting experience will descend upon the small town of Harmony. Beware; the top-ranked haunted house in the state will be opening its doors.

The theme of the 7th annual Monster Bash Haunted House is “Road Trip.”

“We have got some really unique features that we have built in this year's haunted house to catch people off guard,” said Jay Masters, the President of Monster Bash, Inc. “If you came last year, you will not recognize a single thing this year.”

Masters has no doubt the haunted house will live up to its reputation. Last year, it was ranked the number one Halloween attraction in the state by minnesotahauntedhouses.com.

“We have had people come from all over Iowa and from Minnesota and from Wisconsin,” said Sarah Holten, the choir director at Fillmore Central High School and the secretary of Monster Bash, Inc.

Behind the sinister experience is a noble cause. The majority of proceeds go to the Fillmore Central High School arts program.

“In the six years that we have done Monster Bash, we have given back almost $57,000,” said Masters.

Without the program, Taylor Kunz and his brother, Caleb Kunz, would not have been able to go on a recent band trip.

“We went to L.A. and that was pretty spendy,” said Caleb.

“It was $1,500 each last year,” said Taylor.

But because the two spent many hours working at the haunted house, their trips were free.

“I can think of three families that they didn't have to write any checks out of their own pocket,” said Holten.

The band and choir will be heading to Nashville in 2020.

As for the Monster Bash Haunted House … it opens its doors on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.

A full list of dates and times can be found on their website at: http://fchsmonsterbash.com/

Those not wanting to be scared too much will be given glow sticks so actors know to not jump out at them.
