Deputy Corry Retzer will take the Lab/Plott hound mix home.

“I think it’s going to be an exciting addition to the department and my family,” he said.

Hulk’s mother was brought to the Paws and Claws Humane Society in Rochester from a high-kill shelter in Texas, according to Tanya Johnson, director of Paws and Claws.

"She came up very pregnant, gave birth about a week and a half later to 10 puppies. Hulk was one of them. He has always been the biggest, most outgoing one,” she said.

He is now the very first dog in the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit to be adopted from a shelter.

"When we opened the door to those 10 puppies, Hulk came right out the door and was nose to the ground, sniffing everybody," said Sgt. Chris Wallace.

Wallace said Hulk’s curiosity makes him an excellent fit for his role as a single purpose explosive detection dog. He is the only single-purpose dog in the K9 unit. The other four dogs are dual-purpose.

"We've had a few calls here recently where we could have utilized an explosive dog. We've certainly had the ability to get assistance from the Rochester Police Department if we need it, cause they have two single-purpose bomb dogs. But it's our job to provide for the citizens of Olmsted County the best we can. We thought that having an explosive dog would be a benefit to our program and a benefit to the citizens,” said Wallace.

At 10 months, Hulk will begin training with explosives. But for now, he’ll focus on obedience and getting to know his new family.

"I've had dogs my whole life, and my dog now is almost 14 years old and she's getting towards the end. So it will be nice to have a puppy around again,” said Retzer.

All of Hulk’s siblings have been adopted, but his mom is still available. Her name is Cassie and she is on the Paws and Claws website.
