$11,000 Stolen from Youth Hockey Program

(ABC 6 News) -- A few years ago, Dodge County Youth Hockey started a fundraiser to raise money for a new facility and make sure all kids had time on the ice.

"The amount of ice hasn't changed, but the amount of kids trying to share that ice has changed," said President of Dodge County Youth Hockey Terry Lulf.

To make sure the space could expand with the growing numbers, they started a fundraiser.

"Charitable gambling started about four years ago, in an attempt to do big things for the association. We want to add on to the rink, we want to add ice," said Lulf.

People could purchase pull tabs and the proceeds would go towards these projects.

The funds were kept at Events in Kasson.

According to a police report on July 29, a safe containing $11,000 was stolen from the business.

"The loss of that money is going to impact kids. It's no different than stealing the Salvation Army bucket or change box at the register," said Lulf.

With no apparent forced entry and several electronics in plain sight left untouched, the theft remains a mystery.

According to the police report, the officer on scene did see cameras inside the building, but was told by the owner that the DVR was not working.

The owner of Events declined to go on camera, but did say he hopes to find out who was responsible.

He added that his business also made money from the hockey pull tabs, as much as $4,000 a month.

After the July incident, Dodge County Youth Hockey ceased operations at Events and is working to reestablish at other locations, which Lulf says has been just another loss of revenue.

He says this will all impact the kids.

"It's for the kids. We were developing something so they could have a better program," Lulf said. "That was really hard to take. It's a big setback."
