ABC 6 Weather Team Programming Weather Radios for Severe Storms

(ABC 6 News) -- With spring comes severe storms, and the ABC 6 meteorologists want residents to be safe.

ABC 6 Good Morning meteorologist Jim Peterson was at Hy-Vee in Austin Wednesday, programming weather radios. The programs are from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The tones will likely wake you up in the middle of the night with any alert or advisotry you set specifically to your location.

"These weather radios, even the handheld ones, have battery back-ups, so if you lose power, they're still working until the battery runs dry," Peterson said. "So they're a very critical piece of equipment and a tool for severe weather."

Chief meteorologist Chris Kuball will program weather radios at Hy-Vee in Barlow Plaza on Thursday, April 25, from 4 to 6 p.m.
