90 Days Until Pheasant Opener in Austin

(ABC 6 News) -- It’s been around since 2011, and for the first time, it's coming to southeastern Minnesota.

It's also bringing big long-term potential.

"We had reached out to a lot of people in the process of putting the proposal together and a lot of them said yes, we will help you, and we will be supportive, and I think that was the 'wow' factor," said Nancy Schnable at Discover Austin.

It's an event that has already brought a community together, and it's still three months away. But the long-term impact could stretch beyond that.

“In 90 days, Austin is hosting the 2019 Minnesota Governor's Pheasant Hunting opener," Schnable said.

I*t's expected to draw more than 100 media representatives from around the Midwest.

"And they will come and they will talk to our residents and they will be able to see Austin first-hand and be able to go back and promote our community," Schnable said.

And if you want to put a price tag on that:

"And it's been around just shy of $1 million in media impressions that have come from the Minnesota Governor's Pheasant Hunting opener, and so we expect that to be a million dollars or just over that for 2019," she said.

“It's been strongly supported by the community,” said Dave Hagen, a local committee member. “All areas of the community have gotten behind this.”

"We set out with a drop-dead goal of 2,500 acres that we had to put on the event, and we had this lofty goal of 4,000 acres; if we could just get to 4,000 by the opener, we could really have something significant,” said committee member Justin Hanson. “We had 4,000 acres in June.”

"After it's all said and done, we really want people to go away with the idea that there's a lot more to Austin than the Spam Museum or the Hormel Historic Home,” said John Wright, another committee member. “We have so much to offer for families."

"We have a chance to show off our community to the rest of the world,” Hagen said. “And we've got a lot of stuff to show in Austin, Minnesota."
