Local Mom's Invention Keeps Babies, Toddlers Busy

(ABC 6 News) -- Taking toddlers to public restaurants can be stressful, often leaving parents picking up toys instead of catching up on conversation.

But because a busy baby is a happy baby, a Rochester mom and Army veteran found a way to let little ones play, without parents needing to intervene.

It's a simple idea that Beth Fynbo hopes will make a huge difference for parents on the go.

It's a place mat, that also keeps your toddler's toys in place.

"It's good for kids that are, like 6 months to 18 months old," Fynbo said. "Now when kids drop or throw things, they just stay within arm's reach."

Fynbo launched the business about a year ago.

"I thought there had to be something I can buy to keep my son busy while we're at the restaurant," she said. "I went online and looked and couldn't find anything that would work."

So she created the "Busy Baby Mat," a total hit with her son, Christian.

And she soon found it was something other parents wanted.

"When we take Sunny out, when we took him out as a baby prior to this product, we would just be taking products off the floor," said Priv Shenoy, who uses the mat. "We would be brushing them off; they would be dirty and we didn't want to give them back after that."

The place mat is multi-purpose; it can be used on windows and in the bathtub.

Fynbo attributes her entrepreneurial spirit to her experience in the U.S. Army. She served for 10 years.

"The military really helped me learn to adapt and overcome things in life," she said.

But just as important: Her experience as a parent.

"I think moms have the best ideas," Fynbo said, "because we problem-solve all the time with little ones."

The "Busy Baby Mat" is ready to be manufactured; Fynbo will launch a kick-starter campaign Saturday.
