(ABC 6 News) – It’s a struggle most parents face, balancing family life and a career. A local organization addressed that issue Wednesday night, offering advice.
"There's been a lot of encouragement over the past few years that you can work and have a successful career and be a parent, but we're not always given that advice or that knowledge set of 'how do we do that?'" Kristina Hesby said.
That’s why the commission in Rochester scheduled a panel of parents with a range of experience to pass down what they know.
"You know, it's chaotic," said Sheila Terrill.
Working parents like Terrill and her husband said they appreciate the advice, especially in a world where time is limited.
"How to handle being able to be present and in the moment with my kids when I do have them since it's shorter amounts of time," Terrill said.
"I'd go out and work for a few hours and come back," said Judy Braatz, one of the panelists.
She raised her two daughters while working from home most days, and said if parents have that option it makes things a little less hectic, especially if they have small children.
"When I was able to be at home with my kids, then I hired someone to care for them, I got to work and I worked harder in a shorter amount of time," Braatz said.
Terrill said she's constantly learning, but said no matter how much she works, she'll always make time for her family.
"But we've really made it important that we do things together as a family in the evenings, so whether we're playing out in the backyard or having a picnic or going to the park, we always try to do something together," Terrill said.
The panel also stressed to parents if you're a career-driven person, that doesn't mean you're a bad parent or that you love your kids any less than if you were with them all day.
