(ABC 6 News) -- A new CEO has been chosen at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Gianrico Farrugia will replace Dr. John Noseworthy after his retirement at the year’s end.

“I think Mayo Clinic is in a very, very strong position, which makes it a perfect time to do a planned, smooth transition," Noseworthy said. "We’re seeing more patients than we ever have before; our patient outcomes are second to none; our quality and safety is superb."

Dr. Farrugia is vice president and most recently served as Mayo’s CEO in Florida.

“I could never imagine that I would have this opportunity, but I can tell you it will make me work even harder to live up to the trust given to me,” Farrugia said.

He began his journey with Mayo 30 years ago when he left his home country of Malta.

“Malta is a tiny island in the Mediterranean," Farrigua said. "When everybody’s there we’re 400,000 people. I was given the opportunity to come here to train; I came here to train 30 years ago and that was an opportunity that came about because another Maltese physician was here,” he said.

Dr. Farrugia said with the decision only just finalized, he doesn’t have a specific vision for Mayo moving forward.

“We’re going to have to innovate, we’re going to have to show even more ingenuity, we’re certainly going to have to introduce new ways of doing things to serve our patients.”

The two doctors will work together closely leading up to the transition.
