(ABC 6 News) - Mayo Clinic Health Systems is offering tips to help avoid a hangover after ringing in 2020.

Celebrating New Year's often includes consuming alcohol. Here are tips to help reduce the chance of starting 2020 with a hangover.

  • Eat before and while drinking
  • Choose carefully - certain drinks are more likely to give you a hangover
  • Pace yourself
  • Have some water between drinks
  • Know your limits and only drink in moderation
  • Take it slow

But, MCHS said if you do get a hangover, here is how you can deal with the morning-after feeling:

  • Drink a lot of water
  • Have a snack, especially toast and crackers
  • Take a pain reliever
  • Go back to bed

"The only sure way to prevent a hangover is to drink in moderation or not drink at all. For healthy adults, moderate drinking means up to one drink per day for women of all ages and men older than 65, and up to two drinks per day for men 65 or younger."

If you do drink during your celebration, be sure to get a safe ride home.
