(ABC 6 News) -- Your next visit to the doctor could cost less money and stress.

"Two things that we're kind of high on is quality and safety," said Dr. Adam Cole, a diagnostic radiologist at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

Thanks to new technology, staff can now take a closer look at your X-rays.

"The X-ray suite that we have is now kind of an upgraded state of the art facility," Cole said.

That "state of the art facility" could mean a faster diagnosis for your condition and fewer visits to the doctor.

"With the higher quality images you're less likely to miss a very subtle fracture," Cole said. "Something could be there, but if we don't see it, it might get missed, [the] patient goes home, [and] they still have pain."

It's all thanks to the newly renovated radiology department which costs more than $400,000. The women's imaging center also doubled in capacity. Patients can now choose 3D mammograms during screenings, which could better detect cancers and reduce the need for more tests.

"The state of healthcare is challenging right now. Costs are very high and a lot of rural hospitals are closing down," Cole said.
The changes come amid concerns from some Albert Lea patients.

"One of the most important things for the community to know is that we still have these services here," Cole said. "We are actively investing in it, upgrading it, expanding those services that we can keep here and offer to all the community members who would be interested in."

The new equipment could also prevent the need for a CT or MRI scan. It can also provide a standing full spine and hip-to-ankle imaging.
Cole said the advancements also reduce the dosage of radiation exposure to the patient.
