A local organization honors employees with disabilities.
"Everybody wants to be acknowledged, everybody wants to be needed, everybody needs to have a purpose in life," said Eileen Wallace, executive director of PossAbilities. "Employment for some people is exactly what they need and what they want."
October is National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month. For decades, PossAbilities has bridged the gap between individuals with disabilities and employers. Wallace said it's important to recognize the work of the program's participants.
"They're providing value added to that employer, but it's also showing that our community is inclusive," Wallace said.
"We have a wealth of experience and expertise in this area," Wallace added. "Finding jobs, breaking them apart, working with employers, and co-workers to help them understand how best to work with a participant and help them be successful."
The banquet also awarded workers for their contributions to their jobs. Wallace said one way for the community to acknowledge their work is to simply show gratitude.
"We have people with disabilities that are working at Kwik Trip, or Walmart, or Panera [Bread], or Hy-Vee, or Walgreens," Wallace said.
"Thank those employers if they see that happening, thank that employer for being willing to do that."
A chance to commend those who give back to the community.
